Joining us on stage as a judge on ClearTips Disrupt 2021’s Startup Battlefield will be Spark Capital General Partner Yasmin Razavi. Her engineering background and fintech chops should answer vexing questions for the presenting founders.
Razavi invests in growth-stage enterprise, fintech and developer companies, but her background has more recently been engineering-focused. She grew up in Tehran, studied engineering at the University of Toronto and did her MBA at Harvard Business School.
A stint at McKinsey eventually led to becoming a product manager at Snap, where he built the technology behind the app’s monetization stack. She joined Spark in 2017, and has since led investments in Marqueta, Deal, Rapid, Niantic, Capital and Earnin.
We recently had Razavi on Disrupt as a panelist, and of course if you’re an Extra Crunch subscriber you can watch the whole thing here.
“Ultimately anyone who wants to be a shareholder or investor in your business wants to understand the unit economics of your business,” she said during the panel. “For me, all kinds of fancy metrics are being thrown around; Ultimately they all come down to what unit economics is, and what returns can I expect when I invest in growth?”
Razvi’s philosophy is to go to the market and outdo the competition, then capitalize on that success. Why anyone would want to do the opposite is hard to say, but the point is to move as quickly and decisively as possible so that making money later is a natural outcome rather than a scramble.
