Zakir Hussain Wins Big At Grammys: Every Indian Who Has Won A Grammy Ever

Historic Win

Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain scripted history on Sunday night as he became the first Indian artist to win 3 Grammy awards on a single night. Hussain won in categories Best Global Music Album, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album  and Best Instrumental Composition. This is Hussain's fifth Grammy win. He had previously won in 2009 and 1992. 

The night also saw musicians Shankar Mahadevan, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan  winning the Best Global Album Grammy along with Hussain for their band Shakti's album The Moment.  Here's a look at other Indian musicians who have won Grammy awards in the past.

Ravi Shankar

Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar became the first Indian to win a Grammy in 1968. The celebrated musician and composer collected four golden gramophones in total, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and received 10 nominations. He has also won the Best World Music Album, Album of the Year and Best Chamber Music Performance Grammy awards.

Ricky Kej

Indian music composer Ricky Kej won the Grammy twice for his contribution to the music industry. Kej won the Best New Age Album  twice once in 2015 and then in 2022.  In 2023, he won a Grammy in in the Best Immersive Audio Album category.

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt

Classical guitar virtuoso Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt won the Grammy along with American musician Ry Cooder for the Best Album of the Year in the world music category for their recording, A Meeting by the River.

AR Rahman

Apart from the two Oscar Awards, music composer AR Rahman also received two Grammys in 2008 in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media categories for Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire.

Gulzar

In 2008, legendary lyricist Gulzar brought home the golden gramophone for Best Song Written for Visual Media for the song Jai Ho in the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Sridhar and PA Deepak

Sound engineer H Sridhar and mix engineer and record producer PA Deepak each won a Grammy for their work with AR Rahman in Slumdog Millionaire.

Tanvi Shah

Tanvi Shah was the first Indian woman to win the Grammy Award for writing the Spanish lyrics for Jai Ho. 

Neela Vaswani

Musician Neela Vaswani won the Grammy award at the 57th Grammy awards ceremony in the category of Best Children’s Album for I Am Malala.
