Honey has a myriad of benefits for your overall health. However, store-brought honey may not always be pure.

Take these tests

Here are some tests you can take to check the purity of your honey.

Water test

Take a tablespoon of honey and mix it in a glass of water. If the honey is pure, it will lump together and settle at the bottom without readily dissolving.

Heat test

In a saucepan, heat a small amount of honey for 30 seconds. If it caramelises and gives out a caramel-like smell, it is pure. Impure honey may froth or burn.

Paper towel test

Place a small drop of honey onto a sheet of paper towel. Pure honey will not leave a noticeable wet mark and won't be absorbed rapidly.

Thumb test

Take a small amount of honey on your thumb and check if it's sticky.

Smell and taste

Pure honey will have a pleasant smell and will taste like fruits or flowers from which it is derived. On the other hand, impure honey is overly sweet and has no such smell.

Crystallisation

If your honey has crystallised over time, it is pure and of high quality. Adultereted honey will stay in the liquid condition all the time.
