Choose high-quality bitter gourd seeds from a reliable source. Consider the variety of bitter gourds you prefer, such as long or round types.
Select a sunny location for your bitter gourd. If you're growing it in a container, choose a pot with good drainage. For a garden bed, ensure the soil is well-draining and enriched with organic matter.
Plant the seeds about 1 to 1.5 inches deep in the soil or pot. Space the seeds according to the recommended distance for the specific variety. Water the soil well after planting.
Bitter gourd plants are climbers, so provide a vertical support system. This helps the vines grow upward, saves space and allows for better air circulation.
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Water the plants regularly but avoid waterlogging. Fertilise with a balanced fertiliser or compost according to package instructions.
Harvest the bitter gourds when they are still green and about 4 to 6 inches in length. Use a knife to cut it from the vine. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production.
