Wasteland 3 is the game to play while you’re waiting for other games
, Late. , Late. Early access, late. Some of the much awaited upcoming video game releases have been pushed back. While you’re waiting for one or more of them, consider a retro-feeling journey to the glorious days of classic computer RPGs in Westland 3.
The wasteland series lasts all the way to 1988 and sits somewhere between cult and obscure. It is primarily remembered for influencing the Fallout series, which explores equally apocalyptic combat and with sly humor and extensive characters.
The third game in the series received little notice last week on PC, Xbox and PS4. That said, it is part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription on both Xbox and PC, so it may attract an unexpected audience to watch something new to download and play.
It’s actually right off my street, so I was keeping an eye out for it at least. Previously wrote in praise of Fallout (yes, even), , And the upcoming Baldurus Gate 3, I fully admit to talking for a long time, long-talked role-playing games with parties of colorful characters who take part in a turn-based adventure.
After struggling to maintain my frame rate(Helpfully included in the Xbox Game Pass for PC), I was able to crank the game up to ultra graphics settings at full 4K resolution, which was fine with my Nvidia GeForce 2080-powered gaming laptop.
It also means that it’s not the most shocking-looking game ever, but the series fits right in with the ‘disgusting low-budget vibe’ (Wasteland 2 raised its development money on Kickstarter many years ago) . In this new installment, the voice acting is above average and even has some cool original music, but in a move one would appreciate Roger Corman, most of the outskirts are… snow.
I honestly thought the post-apocalyptic vibe outdid itself a few years ago, and there are at least zombie games, movies, and TV shows right now. But our collective obsession with the end of the world continues unabated, no doubtWe are living in 2020.
The fallout game is always played in this charm, adding enough humor to soften the edge. The barren land takes a similar tone. Sometimes it works – like various cyborg chickens that can follow your team’s or game obsession with broken toaster and creepy dolls (which add perks or rare items). Other things do not work so well, such as the Vegas gun trader, literally named Joey Bagdonuts. Groan
But in any case, it’s a little less depressing than playing some more recent apocalyptic games like The Last of Ap Part 2 and Doom Eternal – I also argue that the Mongol-invasion-ghost Ghost of Tsushima comes at it. . category.
Will I shell out $ 60 (£ 50, AU $ 85) for Wasteland 3 as a standalone game? Probably not, although I enjoyed previous games in the series and generally like turn-based RPGs. But, as part of the Xbox Games Pass – actually a PC gamer’s secret weapon in 2020 – it could find a wider new audience taking a break from our reality-based apocalypse and playing in a snowbearing one.
