Director Meghna Gulzar announced on Saturday the upcoming biopic of Marshall Sam Manekshaw, starring Vicky Kaushal, titled Sambahadur. Manekshaw was the head of the Indian Army in 1971 when India fought the Bangladesh Liberation War with Pakistan.
Vicky Kaushal is playing the role of a war hero in a biographical drama produced by Rocky Screwvala. Gulzar and Screwvala’s company RSVP revealed the film’s title on the occasion of the 107th birth anniversary of the Army veteran. The director said that she feels honored to bring Manekshaw’s story on screen.
“He was an army soldier and a gentleman. They no longer make men like Sam Bahadur. On the birth anniversary of the Field Marshal, his story gets its name. I could not be happier, ”Gulzar said in a statement.
Screwvala said that the team is awaiting audience response for the film. He said, “A great man is born today and we hope to do everything in our power to honor his memory and legacy.”
The project is the second collaboration between Gulzar and Kaushal after their 2017 blockbuster Raazi. The actor said that it was important for him to capture the spirit of the war hero who is still remembered and loved today.
Vicky Kaushal said, “I had always heard about the stories of my parents, who had come from Punjab and witnessed the 1971 war, but when I read the script I was completely blown away.”
In 2019, the team shared the first look of Kaushal from the film. Bhavani Iyer, who has co-written Razai’s adapted screenplay, has written the screenplay of Sambahadur with dialogues by Shantanu Srivastava, the author of Badah Ho.
