Uber has offered to acquire delivery service startup Postmates, the New York Times reported late on Monday, citing anonymous sources familiar with the case. According to the newspaper report, the deal may begin on Monday night.

Sources told the newspaper that negotiations were still on and could still end without an agreement.

The acquisition could boost UberEats, a ride-healing startup’s food-delivery service. Due to the dining room closures of many restaurants during the coronovirus epidemic, many have seen delivery and pickup services such as postmates, UberEats, DoorDash and Grubah for their meals. A survey conducted by DoorDash in March found that 56% of 1,000 customers said their takeout consumption had increased due to the epidemic.

Uber was being asked to acquire rival food-delivery service GrubHub but reported a merger negotiation amid antitrust concern. Grubhub Now plans to merge Just Eat Takeaway, the Netherlands’ food delivery service in a $ 7.3 billion deal.

Postmates declined to comment, while Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
