Just before The Mandalorian Season 2 ended, Star Wars fans were gobsmacked — in the best possible way — during The Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Disney Investor Day event.

Lucasfilm’s segment of the presentation saw studio President Kathleen Kennedy announce nearly a dozen new Disney+ Original Star Wars series, in addition to multiple feature films including Patty Jenkins’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (2023) and popular director Taika Waititi’s as-yet-untitled movie.

But, perhaps the most exciting news was that fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano — voiced by Ashley Eckstein in animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and portrayed in live-action by Rosario Dawson — would be getting her very own spinoff show, simply titled Ahsoka.

Details about the show — which was originally slated to air concurrently with Pedro Pascal’s (Din Djarin) The Mandalorian Season 3 and the now-canceled Gina Carano (Cara Dune) spinoff Rangers of the New Republic — have been scant, although many fans are presuming it will serve as a Star Wars Rebels sequel, following Tano’s hunt for fellow Jedi Ezra Bridger and the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Thrawn’s name was introduced into the live-action Star Wars universe in the Dave Filoni-directed The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 5 (“Chapter 13: The Jedi”), which saw Dawson in her debut as Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan.
After forming an unlikely partnership with bounty hunter Djarin — and, of course, little Grogu (AKA “Baby Yoda”) — Tano was fighting Corvus Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) when she learned that Thrawn was, in fact, behind all of Elsbeth’s nefarious actions.

This set up Ahsoka and led to the aforementioned presumption that numerous Rebels characters from Hera Syndulla’s Ghost ship crew are likely to make their live-action debuts in the show. In addition to Syndulla, Bridger, and Thrawn, fans would love to see Sabine Wren and Syndulla’s son with Kanan Jarrus, Jacen Syndulla.
Now, it seems that there might finally be an update about the highly-anticipated series, which many Star Wars fans are even more excited about than The Mandalorian’s “next chapter” The Book of Boba Fett.

Marc Bernardin said during Fatman Beyond (the podcast he co-host with Kevin Smith) that he wanted to cast Rosario Dawson in his short film shooting this December, but couldn’t because she’ll be busy filming “Star Wars” in Manhattan Beach.
So either the “Ahsoka” show is starting production sooner than we thought and not early 2022 (like THR said last week), or she is in Mando S03 (currently filming at Manhattan Beach.)

While Lucasfilm and Disney have not officially confirmed when Ahsoka will begin filming, commenters have their own opinions about what could be occurring in Manhattan Beach, California. It is certainly intriguing, however, that Kevin Smith’s podcast confirmed that Dawson will for sure be filming Star Wars before 2021 ends.
Stated they have and are trying to acquire multiple new spaces at Manhattan Beach so they can film multiple shows in new volumes at once. Perhaps Jon [Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau] is focusing on Mando season 3 while Dave heads off to lead the Ahsoka production. With all the Mando spin-offs they possibly want to produce two at a time now.

Some fans also shared their opinions about how Ahsoka could connect to The Mandalorian Season 3, which is expected to follow the ongoing Darksaber plot — Djarin now wields the black-bladed weapon that both Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) desire:
I have a strange feeling that this is going to be how they introduce Sabine and the plot of Ahsoka (i.e. the search for Erza.) to the audience. Like if the 75 Mandalorian rumor is true, then I imagine that part/most of S3 would involve Din getting them all together. I can see Bo telling Din that Ahsoka is with another Mandalorian but he has to track them down. Din finds them but Ahsoka/Sabine say they can’t help Bo as they have to find Ezra as [insert exposition for Ahsoka]. But if Din does ‘xyz-sidequest’ with them they will tell him where other Mandos are (Sabine’s family, Fenn Rau, etc…). Din agrees and the episode is basically showing more Ahsoka and Sabine as a character. At the end, Ahsoka and Sabine start their journey to find Ezra/Thrawn and Din goes on his way to find other Mandalorians.
Dave and Jon know that most of the audience of the Mandalorian will not have watched Rebels so using an episode to introduce Sabine and the search for Ezra makes sense. They did the same for Ahsoka with her episode and the last half of S2 was basically a long character exposition of Boba for the BoBF. I can see them doing it for *Ahsoka/*Sabine in S3.
For now, again, this is all pure speculation — but, we do know one other confirmed Ahsoka cast member in addition to Dawson.
Hayden Christensen will again reprise his Star Wars prequel trilogy role as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. Do with that information what you will while we wait to learn more…
