The New Faces of Pride: Maisie Richardson-Sellers on Diversifying the Entertainment Industry and More
You are given the key to your industry. The first thing is that you do it to create a more inclusive environment for all?
I will diversify the industry from top to bottom. Only once are studio heads, network executives, programmers, financiers, casting and show runners diverse, we will begin to see diverse content created from experience rather than imagination. One thing that current gatekeepers are failing to realize is that simply adding more POC and LGBTQAI + characters as the subplot and quirky side kick is not enough to attract white hero stories. When the people who make and write and direct stories are not diverse, we end time and time again and miss out on the nuances and magic of two different experiences.
What is your message for the future generation, the upcoming, queued people? How do you want to instill hope in them?
I am collectively deeply inspired and humbled by the openness, curiosity and determination of my generation. Your personal story, your fire, your dreams, which make you an important part of the fabric of this next chapter. Do not forget that allowing yourself to be insecure is a great strength, and it nourishes your mental and emotional health which makes you better to support others. Refused to settle. Refused to sit. Now is your time
