The best office chair of 2021

I spend most of the time each day, but office chairs have not crossed my mind too much. Before March 2020, I did most of my work at CNET Smart Home, where we do testing Security cameras, Smart speakers And other products. I recorded stories from upright dining room chairs, padded sofas and butt-numbed patio furniture – anything but a comfortable chair to work on, which was not just on my radar.

I have been stuck mainly with my smart home method for 10 months which I am working from my home. Some days, I write from a couch; On other days, I sit in a stone chair on the front porch. No two days are the same and I am slowly realizing that it is terrible for my back and my posture. My husband is also working from home, at a desk we rarely used before the epidemic. As it turns out, the no-padded seat cushion, the no-back-support office chair that we use with that desk, is not working well for that.

It was time for a change. So I tested 10 office chairs, which ranged in price from $ 32 to $ 1,395, knowing that we would buy a pair of the best office for our home when we finished.

I also spoke with an ergonomics expert for general suggestions on improving the setup of work, whether it is at home or in a more traditional office setting. Seat height, backrest, adjustable arms, adjustable height, adjustable lumbar support, tilt tension, and depth of seat are all factors that most match your computer chair.

For the purposes of this list, I’ve only tested traditional office chairs, so if you’re looking at something like a gaming chair or drafting chair, or something outside, such as a knee chair, this might not be the right place for you. Can. .

pay attention: Product pricing varies on third-party sites, so the price I quote as I write this may change over time. I try my best to update the list frequently to reflect the most accurate prices at the time of publication.

A terrible chair alone is not enough

Ergonomics is the “science of work”, explains Gary Aldrey, program director for the ergonomics division at the Ohio State University’s Spine Research Institute. However this definition does not just apply to our jobs; Ergonomic principles can be used for any activity (this means that the ergonomic chair is not going to cure your lower back pain immediately). Allred and his team provide consulting services for a wide variety of workplaces, from manufacturing plants to the auto industry and more. They even occasionally provide input on product design to help companies build products better “to ensure they can interact with people as well as themselves,” says Allred Huh.

A less-than-ideal work setup can cause pain in your back, arms, hands, or wrists. Maybe you can also call yourself fidgeting, making more mistakes or taking more breaks – because you’re uncomfortable – says Allread. Long term, you may end up with tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Everybody gives two main suggestions that anyone can try to improve how they work:

  • Sit with your back against your chair. (“You want the chair to work and not your back,” he explains.)
  • Support your feet. Either place your feet on the floor or, if they do not reach, use a box or other leg rest to support your feet.

If your chair lacks lumbar support, Allred says, you can roll up a towel, secure it with tape or rubber bands and hold it back to “back into its natural curve”. Allrad also notes that companies are beginning to offer different chair sizes that support a wider range of body sizes, which is an important consideration if you’re shopping for a new ergonomic office chair and Looking for seat height and seat depth or your needs.

“One mistake people make, is that they say, ‘If I get a great chair, I’m not going to be angry anymore, and this is really the big picture it takes to keep people relaxed and productive.’ Not at their job, ”explains Allread. There are a lot of factors, and a new chair is one of many things that can make your work environment more comfortable.

So, let us all keep in mind as we weigh our options for the best office chair. I have good options here, including a leather chair, forged chair, and more, and I will update the list periodically.

Best office chairs

Hbada Office Task is my favorite office chair as desk chair. This ergonomic office chair has a streamlined design that does not take up a lot of space. It also has good lumbar support and a supportive, breathable mesh backrest. At $ 130, it is very affordable.

After trying all the models, I found myself for this chair the most often. It lacks the padded comfort of my second favorite chair (scroll down to see the winner), but it is the most well-rounded model I’ve tested that ticks almost every box.

Some facts:

  • Price (Amazon): $ 130
  • Finish: Black Upholstery & Mesh
  • Weight range: 250 pounds

It is not the sleekest looking chair around, but the Serta Arlington lacks the style it makes up for with comfort and adaptability. Serta is a mattress manufacturer, and tracks it with an extremely comfortable Arlington chair. This ergonomic chair is by far the most cushioned model I’ve tried, with layers of soft cushions on the headrest, backrest, armrest, and seat.

Despite its comfort, it provides decent support for an adjustable lumbar lever under the seat.

It is currently down from the $ 300 price to the $ 300 list price. If you are looking for a comfortable office chair with customizable lumbar support, this is a great option.

Some facts:

  • Price (Amazon): $ 250
  • Finish: Black Leather
  • Weight Limit: 275 pounds

I immediately liked the AmazonBasics leather-padded swivel office chair. It was easy to assemble, the leather design looks good and both the adjustable seat and back are cushioned and comfortable. At about $ 92, this AmazonBasics chair is not inexpensive, but is a great option, which is, without exception, relatively inexpensive without lumbar support.

If lumbar support is required of you, consider one of my other favorites.

Overall, however, the AmazonBasics leather-padded swivel office chair is a comfortable, reasonably priced ergonomic chair that is easy to put together and easy on the eye.

Some facts:

  • Price (Amazon): $ 84
  • Finish: Black Leather
  • Weight Capacity: 275 pounds

OK I know. It is an ergonomic office chair very Expensive, but there is a lot more to it – a great design, lots of adjustments, lumbar support and, bonus, it comes in three sizes. I got a size B, which fit within the height and weight range of both me and my husband.

One issue is its price, which is why it did not win for the best chair overall. More than $ 1,400 for a chair, even you use for hours everyday, is simply not a fair price for most people, us included. I will be sad to see this.

Some facts:

  • Price: $ 1,445
  • Finish: many color options, mesh
  • Weight Capacity: Varies depending on the size of the chair

Test office chairs

Here is the complete list of office chairs I checked:

How did I choose my favorite? First, I assembled each chair and noted any issues with the process, with the exception of the Herman Miller Aaron Chair and Steelcase Gesture Chair, as they were fully assembled (bonus points for that). Then, I spent a working day, or about eight hours, sitting on each chair, paying attention to the level of comfort, adjustment, and any issues I had. I also asked my husband to try out each chair. For reference, I am 5 feet 7 inches, that is 6 feet 2 and the average weight of both of us.

Of course, what might work for me or for him may not work for you, but I kept all the suggestions in mind, Gary Allad from the Spine Research Institute had mentioned me as a sit-in and so did Kevin. Told to:

  • Was the chair designed so that I could sit comfortably behind the chair?
  • Did my feet touch the floor with my back against the back of the chair?
  • Did I find myself extravagant or too steep?
  • Did I experience any pain or discomfort while using a particular chair?

I immediately had to run the Haunted Armless Task Chair from the cutting, after noting a label inside the box that read “NOT FOR ADULT USE.” Apparently this chair, which regularly appears on the list of adult office chairs, has a weight limit of 100 pounds. I wasn’t alone, either – Many customers have written online reviews Expressing disappointment that this chair (which first appears on the market for adults, on Home Depot’s website if not Amazon) broke down while they were using it. If you’re an adult under 100 pounds, this chair could potentially work for you, but its limited features, including armrests, completely rule it for me regardless.

So we were under nine chairs. Despite looking very good and padded, we both found the OFM Essentials Collection Executive Office President a bit harsh and uncomfortable. It also lacks the support of Kath. The Honey Exposure Mesh Task Computer Chair also lacks lumbar support and Linus for both of us, making it uncomfortable to sit with our back against the backrest as Allred suggests. The BestOffice mid-back ergonomic desk chair leans far back, although it had slightly more lumbar support than the Honey Exposure Chair.

The Humanscale Freedom Chair mostly assembled; All I had to do was connect the top half and the wheelbase. Despite the simplicity of putting it together, I struggled to adjust this chair without consulting instructions. Even after finding out, both my husband and I found the back and headrest to be strangely proportioned and extremely uncomfortable on our back and neck. The Steelcase Gesture Chair is highly adjustable and feels sturdy. But with its many customization controls, including the seat depth adjuster set to maximum depth, the seat was too low and tilted downward, making me feel like I could get out of the chair.

The other four chairs that I included in the best office chair list above kept us comfortable all day and offered the degree of adjustment that separates them from the pack.
