informer

This entertaining British series is about, yes, an informant and an area involved in bullying to take someone into dangerous territory. Paddy Considine (now a gig on the Game of Thrones prequel) stars as DS Gab Waters, a counter-notification officer tasked with infiltrating a far-right movement in West Yorkshire. By partnering with an excellent Bel Pavle (The Morning Show, The King of Staten Island) as the young and curious DC Holly Morton, he is a British Pakistani raza (Nabhan Rizwan) to uncover information about a possible terrorist attack. Attempts to get on board. A provocative thriller that will keep you on your toes.

This TV version of Hanging Rock’s Picnic is not a masterpiece like the 1975 film adaptation of the classic Australian novel. But it is equally mysterious, uncovering an imaginary yet ghastly veil when an imaginary disappears into the isolated Australian bush. When three students and their regimes disappear after a picnic in the rock area, a frenzy ensues in the community and respected Appleyard College, led by the formidable headmistress of Natri Dormer. Dark secrets emerge, which keep you hanging until the end.

Good omens

Two other UK treasures are the novel duo David Tennant and Michael Sheen by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pritchett. They play the demon Crowley and the angel Azirafle respectively in a tower that sees Earth on the verge of destruction for a final battle between heaven and hell. Conversely, after enjoying their time on the planet, the Beekering duo team up and attempt to stop Armageddon. With a stacked cast, Benedict Cumberbatch’s cameo as well, Devil, Good Omens is a worthy adaptation, thanks mainly to the double acting of Tennant and Sheen.

Wilds

Adventuress

Amazon’s first original young adult offering is a tricky combination of Lost and the Breakfast Club – and it works. Seriously, all of the characters who find themselves stranded on a deserted island are teenagers. For them, it makes life even more painful. Each has a very different background – from spoiled rich girl to Native American – but they must separate their differences to survive, learning about one or two things along the way. Things get even deeper and thrilling when Rachel Griffith comes into the picture as head of Gretchen Klein’s Secret Dow Eve program.

Loop stories

Adventuress

Not just another show about a small town where strange things happen, tales from the loop abound beneath the surface. Drawing from a narrative art book by Swedish artist Simon Stelnag, the series is stunning to watch, as can be the case with symmetrical frames. Light and space are realized with a picture. The interconnected townspeople are equally naughty, their stories exploring more through loneliness, aging, the effects of technology and sci-fi ideas.

Truth seekers

Adventuress

Longtime comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) hit the small screen with truth seekers, a surprisingly dark comedy with a sinister edge. Frost plays Gus, an unusual investigator when he is not working for Dave (Peg) Broadband Company, which is operating in creepy homes across the UK. The ghost-a-week format shifts to solving a big plot with some big stars who clearly have a ball. It won’t top Peg and Frost’s list of best projects, but it is well fun, especially around Halloween.
