The trailer of the upcoming Tamil film Teddy was released on Tuesday. While watching the trailer, director Shakti Dhwnir Rajan has again taken inspiration from a Hollywood film and turned it into a typical Tamil ‘masala’ potboiler. Starring Arya in the lead role, the film also features a teddy bear who can talk, move and behave like a sidekick to a typical hero in Tamil cinema.
While Naigal was inspired by Zakirthai Turner and Hooch, he turned to Hollywood zombie thrillers for Miruthan and took the idea of a plot from Armageddon for Tic Talks. For Teddy, it is reasonable to assume that he was inspired by director Seth MacFarlane’s TED film franchise. Or is it Winnie the Pooh?
However, it is clear from the trailer that Teddy is not a buddy comedy like Ted. You don’t smoke teddy bears a joint and hit on girls. The Tamil film’s plot seems to deal with a serious medical crime. The trailer gives us so much information, including a bit of subtle projection. The protagonist, played by Arya, claims that many times a coma patient, who is an organ between life and death, feels out of body.
Maybe a soul who survived that limb found refuge in a teddy bear, giving him life. And now when Teddy Bear has joined forces with the protagonist to eliminate crooked business operations costing many human lives.
The film stars Sayesha as the female head. And it also stars Satish and Sakshi Aggarwal in supporting roles. Produced by Kei Gnanavel Raja under the banner of Studio Green, the film will release directly on the OTT platform next month. Teddy will start streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar from March 12.
