The cell giant said in a notice buried on its website that it recently discovered some customers ‘unauthorized access to account information, in which Cell collects its customers’ data to provide mobile service.
From the notice: “Our cyber security team recently discovered and closed malicious, unauthorized access to certain information related to your T-Mobile account. We immediately launched an investigation, with the help of prominent cyber security forensics experts, to determine what happened and what information was involved. We also immediately reported the matter to federal law enforcement and are now in the process of notifying affected customers. “
Known as Customer Owned Network Information (CPNI), this data may include call records – such as when the call was made, the caller’s phone number for how long, and the destination phone number for each call , And other information that can be found on the customer’s bill.
But the company said that the hackers did not use names, home or email addresses, financial data and account passwords (or PINs).
On noticing T-Mobile violations, the notice did not say that only now it was informing the affected customers.
A T-Mobile spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment, but told a news site that the breach affects about 0.2% – or about 200,000 – of all T-Mobile subscribers.
This is the latest security incident to hit the SAIL veteran in recent years.
In 2018, T-Mobile stated that two million customers may have scattered their personal information. A year later, the company confirmed that the hackers had accessed records on other million prepaid customers. In just 2020, T-Mobile admitted a breach to its email system, in which hackers used some T-Mobile employee email accounts, exposing some customer data.
