Deepa Chatterjee, wife of late Bengali veteran Soumitra Chatterjee, died early Sunday morning in a Kolkata hospital. She was 83. Chatterjee’s daughter Paulomi Bose confirmed the news to PTI.
Due to deteriorating health, Deepa was admitted to a hospital in Belaghata, Kolkata, where she died last night due to kidney failure. “Ma breathed his last at around 2:55 am,” said Polomi. She died of kidney failure. ”Paulomi told another publication that after Soumitra Chatterjee passed away in November, Deepa had lost her will to live. He said, “After Bapi (father, Soumitra) moved with us in November, Mother lost her desire to live. She kept telling us, ‘Please let me go now’.
Deepa Chatterjee, who was a badminton champion, was also an actress. She worked with the iconic Bengali stars Uttam Kumar and Supriya Chaudhary in the 1970 film Bilambita Le and Durga.
Saumitra Chatterjee and Deepa married in 1960 and when the legendary actor passed away 60 years ago, they were married on November 15, when they tested negative for COVID-19. The actor was cremated with a gun salute and was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as well as several cinema personalities from the Bengali film industry.
Soumitra Chatterjee and Deepa Chatterjee are survived by their daughter, Paulomi Bose and son Saugata Chatterjee.
