Singer-actor SP Balasubrahmanyam died on Friday following coronovirus complications. He was 74 years old. SPB’s son SP Charan told reporters at MGM Healthcare in Chennai, “SPB belongs to everyone.” He would dance to his songs. My father died at 1.04. “

A hospital statement read, “Thiru SP Balasubramanian was admitted to MGM Healthcare on 5 August and embarked on life support measures for severe COVID-19 pneumonia from 14 August. He was closely monitored by our multi-disciplinary team in the Critical Care Unit. He tested negative for COVID-19 on 4 September. In another setback this morning, despite maximum life support measures and the best efforts of the clinical team, his condition worsened and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. With deep sorrow, we regret to state that he has died on September 25 at 13:04. We express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, well wishers and fans for their loss during this time of suffering and sorrow. “

SPB was tested positive for Kovid-19 in the first week of August. Later his condition deteriorated and he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of MGM Healthcare. He remained on ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support until his last breath.

SP Balasubramanian was honored by fans of age groups for his unique contribution to Indian music. He set a Guinness World Record to sing over 40,000 songs.

Apart from singing in films in 16 languages ​​including Tamil, Telugu Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, SP Balasubramanian also played important roles in several films. His major films include Kaledi Kanmani (1990), Thiruda Thiruda (1993), Kadhalan (1994), Ullasam (1996) and others.

In a career spanning over five decades, SPB has won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and 25 Nandi Awards. The Government of India awarded the singer-actor with Padma Shri in 2001 along with Padma Bhushan in 2011.
