Consumer Reports has just released its annual report card on what rates car brands make the best vehicles – and there are some surprises.
Mazda, for example, topped the list for the first time, rising three places since last year. The Japanese automaker has enjoyed success with its subcompact Mazda CX-30 SUV as well as its midsize CX-9 SUV, which received much acclaim in Digital Trends’ hands-on review.
BMW finished in second place, climbing an impressive six places, while Subaru ranked at number three.
Consumer Reports reaches its ranking by looking at individual scores for each model for road-test performance, perceived reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. This then works out the average to come up with a brand’s overall score.
“Brands that rise to the top have the most sustained performance in their lineup,” CR said in an article about the results, “however, it is important to research individual models when shopping because every brand has a range Is product performance. “
The rankings show Honda taking a big jump, reaching number five on the chart from 10 places last year, which Consumer Reports said was partly responsible for the improved reliability, stating that all Hondas now have Average reliability or better research.
At the other end of the ranking is the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo, which is at the bottom after dropping five places to 32 from last year. The Land Rover sits above 30, with Mitsubishi at 30.
Chrysler and Buick ranked highest among American brands, both climbing an impressive 10 places to take eighth and ninth spots, respectively.
Newcomer Tesla, who has ties to the auto industry, placed 16th at number five. Luxury brands Genesis (15th, down 13) and Lincoln (28th, down 15) reported the biggest declines. The nonprofit consumer organization said the big moves could usually be attributed to “changes in perceived reliability for individual models within the brand’s lineup”.
