Samsung has just sent out invites for its next Unpacked event. There are companies that like to hint in their invites – and then there’s Samsung. The Note carries the big, bold words “Get ready to unfold” on the front and features a pair of flat-colored objects, which can be said to be similar in form factor to the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip respectively.
Keeping in mind the normalcy of the world over the past year and a half, the event will be held virtually on Wednesday, August 11. Interestingly, the company is also opening pre-orders at its “next flagship” destinations. And ignore the glasses. Perks for pre-orders include “12 free months of Samsung Care+, an additional $200 trade-in credit, and a special pre-order offer.”
But honestly, it’s usually best to wait until you’ve actually seen the thing and maybe even read a review or two.
There’s a lot (so to speak) to unpack before the event. First, I’m probably not the only one hoping that the company will focus its next big event on the upcoming Galaxy Watch. The big MWC event was a bit bland (not unlike MWC itself) offering more details about the upcoming wearable partnership with Google, in lieu of announcing any hardware.
As the company noted at the time, “the upcoming One UI Watch will debut at an upcoming Unpacked event later this summer, featuring the new UI as well as the upcoming joint Samsung/Google platform.”
It’s reasonably likely that this will be the event where this happens, even if the new watch doesn’t get top billing. For one thing we’re running out of summer. For another, the rumors have the new Galaxy Watch set for the end of August (27.)th) release.
All told, this could be a huge summer event for the company, bucking the trend of mixing devices one by one in last year’s virtual inventions. Word on the street is that we’ll be seeing the Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy S21 FE (“Fan Edition”—basically the latest version of the company’s budget flagship) and even the Galaxy Watch 4 You can also check out Buds Pro. Which will lead more directly to the AirPods Pro (which is getting a bit long in the tooth).
What is missing in all this? No points if you said note. Samsung’s favorite phablet is reportedly not arriving this year, as chip shortages are plaguing the industry. This will be a big hit for Samsung’s six-month cycle, though we’ll see how it all pans out soon.
11 augustth The event starts at 10AM ET / 7AM PT.
