Released on July 13, 2001, the legal comedy starred Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a blonde witchcraft girl who earns a degree at Harvard and becomes a very successful lawyer. A massive hit at the box office, the film spawned an ongoing franchise, with another installment currently in the works.
40th anniversary, Reese Witherspoon posted a photo of herself as Elle Woods, holding the character’s pet dog. There are many fans who can find it hard to believe that it’s been two decades since we first saw Elle, and time has flown by just as fast for Witherspoon. In the tweet, the actress said, “Omigod you guys… legally Blonde Premiered 20 years ago today! Time passes when you are busy using legal terminology in your daily life.”
Directed by Robert Luctic, legally Blonde Written by Karen McCulla Lutz and Kirsten Smith, based on the book by Amanda Brown. Along with Witherspoon, the film also stars Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber and Jennifer Coolidge. The role earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress as well as another nomination at the MTV Movie Awards for Best Female Performance. It also made a profit of over $141 million on a budget of $18 million.
Based on the success of the original, a sequel was developed for release in 2003. Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, the follow-up brings Witherspoon back as Elle Woods, with the character switching locations to do her practice in Washington DC. Wilson and Coolidge reprized their roles with other actors including Sally Field, Regina King, Bruce McGill, Dana Ivy, Bob Newhart and Mary Lynn Rajskub. It was not well received by critics, but was nonetheless a huge hit at the box office.
2009 sequel, legally Blondes, served as a soft reboot without Witherspoon returning as Elle Woods. Instead the spinoff followed Camila Rosso and Rebecca Rosso as Elle’s twin cousins, each of whom has a similar style of pet dog, while the twins stay at Elle’s house while she is away. It was released live on DVD and aired on ABC Family and Disney Channel.
Witherspoon is now set to make her return to the franchise with Legally Blondes 3. Originally slated for release in 2020 ahead of pandemic-related delays, the film is now on board for a May 2022 release. Mindy Kaling and Dan Gore will write the screenplay for MGM. In addition to reprising her role as Elle Woods, Witherspoon will also produce through her Hello Sunshine studio with original producer Mark Platt. Original star Luke Wilson has also said that he will return if there is a demand for his role in the new film.
“Someone just told me it’s coming up on its 20th anniversary, which I couldn’t believe,” Wilson told ET in May. “I definitely run into women now who were kids when they came out and they say to me, ‘Now I’ve introduced my daughter to the movie. So it’s really cool and I’ve never done this before, where it’s presented to another generation like a movie by the people who originally watched it.”
