Wentworth Miller, famous for his role as Michael Scholfield on the hit show escape from prisonreached via Instagram to reveal his autism diagnosis. He wants to bring awareness and reach out to the autistic community to help learn what happens next. Wentworth Miller Shared the following on Instagram.
“Like everyone else, life in quarantine took things from me. But in quiet/isolation, I received unexpected gifts. This fall is 1 year since I received my informal autism diagnosis. Before a self-diagnosis. A formal one After diagnosis. It was a long, flawed process that needed updating. IMO. I’m a middle aged man. Not 5 years old. And (it’s “both/and”) I agree that until diagnosis Access is a privilege many people don’t enjoy. Let’s just say it was a setback. But not a surprise.”
“There’s a now-familiar cultural narrative (that I’ve participated in) that goes, “Public man A, B and C share publicly, D, E and F dedicate the stage.” Good for them . /srs&(it’s a “both/and”) That’s not necessarily what’s going to happen here. I don’t know enough about autism. (There’s a lot to learn.) Right now my job is to develop my understanding Feel like doing it. Experience 5 Decades of Life Re-Examining Through a New Lens.”
“This will take time. In the meantime, I don’t want to risk having a sudden loud, misinformed voice in the room. The #autisticcommunity (this I know) has been talked about historically. Spoken for. I’m extra Don’t want to harm. Just raise your hand and say, “Here I am. has been done (it is being felt). “If anyone is interested in going deeper into #autism + #neurodiversity, I point you to the many people sharing thoughtful + inspiring content on Instagram, TikTok… Opening up the vocabulary. Adding nuance to stigma fight.”
“These creators (some quite young) talk more knowledge/fluently than me on relevant issues. (They’re even schooling me.) That’s the range I’m inclined to share atm. Oh – it’s ‘ I wouldn’t change anything. No. I got – got – instantly being autistic is central to me. Everything I’ve achieved/expressed.”
“Oh – I also want to say to the (many) people who consciously or unknowingly gave me that extra grace + space that allowed me to move through the world in a way whether I understood it or not. They got it… Thanks. And to those who made a different choice… OK. People will reveal themselves. Another gift.
