Porsche has added its first all-electric vehicle, the Tecan Sports sedan, to its membership and short-term rental program as part of a broader expansion aimed at building a new customer base of American owners.
The German automaker said on Thursday that it was expanding Porsche Drive’s membership and rental programs from four more cities to five more cities. It is now offered to customers residing in Atlanta, Houston and Phoenix and in Irvine, Los Angeles, Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose in California. Porsche said it plans to continue expanding throughout the United States this year and in 2022.
Porsche’s programs are about flexibility – and it comes with a price. The Tycan 4S model, initially available only under single-vehicle membership or rental plans, costs about 20% more than the monthly cost of a comparable two-year lease. The Taycan 4S charges $ 3,250 per month and the Taycan rear-wheel drive will be $ 2,500 monthly.
Under the short-term plan, the Tykon 4S costs $ 335 per day for rent for one to three days and $ 295 per day for four days. All prices exclude taxes and fees and any customer will have to pay a $ 595 activation fee. Porsche is adding the Tikkan rear-wheel drive model later this spring.
Despite the eye-popping price of these programs, they have been popular enough to warrant an expansion. Porsche Drive is booked one to two months in most markets, a company spokesperson told ClearTips.
The automaker sees these programs as complementary to selling and renting cars, according to Kjell Grüner, president and CEO of Porsche Car North America. About 80% of Drive customers are new to Porsche, Gruner said.
Porsche first launched a membership program in 2017 and has been raiding ever since. There are now three plans or tiers, all housed under its Porsche Drive Vehicle Membership Program, which was reintroduced in 2020. The strongest plan is the Porsche Drive – Multi-Vehicle Subscription, which offers customers the ability to swap through a variety. The Porsche Drive-Single Vehicle Subscription gives an option to use one vehicle for one or three months on a monthly basis for vehicles. Then there is Porsche Drive – Rental, which, as the name suggests, offers short-term rentals targeted to those who want access to the brand’s luxury sports cars and SUVs for a week or just a week .
All these plans are accessed by the Porsche Drive app. Users can choose their vehicle and schedule concierge service for vehicle delivery and pick-up through the app. The membership plan is all based on a flat monthly fee that covers vehicle maintenance and insurance.
