Pakistan Elections 2024

Pakistan will hold general elections on February 8, 2024, to choose the representatives of the 16th National Assembly. On December 15, 2023, the Pakistan Election Commission released the full schedule.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), headed by previous foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N), headed by the previous prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, are the two main political parties.

In the last elections, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was the biggest party. But in the lead-up to the elections, they are compelled to run their nominees as Independents due to a contentious Supreme Court decision that deprived them of their official electoral emblem.

Pakistan Election 2024 Main Parties and Leaders

Here is the detail of the top three pastries and leaders who are participating in the 2024 election.

Nawaz Sharif(PML-N)

  • The founder and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, Nawaz Sharif, served as prime minister of the nation three times before being removed from office each time.
  • He offered India a “The message of Harmony” in his party declaration, but only if New Delhi changed its mind on Kashmir.
  • Sharif is well-liked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who noted both India’s and the world’s achievements. India and Pakistan may restart commercial and historical relations if he comes back to power.

Imran Khan(PTI)

  • Imran Khan, the winner of the 2018 general election in Pakistan, is not eligible to run for office again until after serving a jail sentence in 2022.
  • Khan’s popularity is still considerable despite his time in jail, and his political group, PTI, wants to capitalize on the resentment and sympathy of its fans to win again in 2018.
  • Regarding India, Khan’s views have been erratic; some have called for a quid pro quo relationship, while others have stated that they are open to discussion to address unresolved matters.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari(PPP)

  • The head of Pakistan’s People’s Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, is a contemporary contender and the son of Benazir Bhutto, the first Muslim woman to assume the presidency of a country.
  • In 2022, he was appointed as Pakistan’s most youthful foreign minister. Since then, he has chastised India for violating Article 370 by holding a tourist conference in Kashmir.
  • Additionally, Bhutto-Zardari has spoken out against India’s foreign policies and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as ” a butcher of Gujarat”.
  • But given that his family has always been against India going back to his grandfather’s struggle against the country he has come under fire for his anti-Indian views.

The February 8 Pakistani general elections are expected to be unpredictable due to factors like popular support, electables, influential families, money, and powers. As we know with at least 134 seats required to win a simple majority.

The PML-N is expected to emerge as the largest party in the National Assembly, leading to a hung parliament. Voter turnout is crucial, with the PML-N winning a simple majority in the Punjab Assembly and PTI-backed independent candidates in the KP Assembly with 115 general seats.

Karachi will be the main battleground in the 2024 elections. In Sindh, the PPP is likely to win 41 out of the 61 National Assembly seats, with the rest divided between the GDA, MQM, and PTI-backed independent candidates.

Pakistan 2024 Election Method

The National Assembly now has 266 representatives instead of 272, as a consequence of the separation of numerous districts and changes to their territory brought about by the 2023 national census.

Punjab maintained 141 seats, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gained 45. With 61 and 16 seats, respectively, Sindh and Balochistan kept their seats. There are three seats in the Islamabad Capital Territory, 60 of which are designated for women and 10 for non-muslims.

Seventy seats in the National Assembly have been assigned for reserved applicants meaning that 266 of the 336 members will be elected directly. It is compulsory to win 134 seats as a whole to become a prime minister of the country.
