It is very easy to recycle your beauty products in Canada thanks to the Nordstrom Beautycycle program.
Starting today, the retailer will accept empty beauty product packaging at any Nordstrom Canada store regardless of the brand. The goal is to ensure that hard-to-recycle packaging is not sent directly to landfill. (120 billion units of plastic packaging produced globally by the beauty industry, just less than nine percent, are actually recycled.)
The move makes Nordstrom – who first launched the program last year – Canada’s first major retailer to offer a catch-all beauty-focused recycling program.
So how does it work?
At Nordstrom Beauty Departments nationwide, customers will find TerraCycle zero waste boxes where you can simply leave your free space. Once complete, the material will be sent to the recycling company to be properly cleaned, sorted and recycled.
Most packaging is accepted by the Nordstrom Beautycycle Initiative, but there are some limitations. For example, items such as shampoo and conditioner bottles and caps, lip balm tubes, lotion bottles and dispensers, and mascara tubes are all fine, while items such as aerosol cans, perfume bottles and nail polish packaging are recycled through the program Can not be done.
Nordstrom set a permanent goal of his own through the program. By 2025, the brand aims to roll back 100 tonnes of beauty packaging. This tops the retailer’s previous sustainability objectives, including, among other things, reducing single-use plastics by up to 50 percent and ensuring that 15 percent of all its products are durable.
