Netflix’s Big Mouth, Apple TV Plus’ Central Park will recast biracial characters
Jenny Slate and Kristen Bell will no longer voice animated characters who are people of color.
Slate voices for a character named Missy in Netflix’s animated show, And Bell voiced a character named Molly in the TV TV plus show Central Park. Both characters are written as a white parent.
In a post on Instagram on Wednesday, Slate said she initially told herself that it was okay to voice a character named Missy because Missy’s mother is white and Jewish, as is Slate. But in the end, she said, black characters should be played by black people in an animated show.
“I acknowledge how flawed my original argument was, that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within the system of social supremacy and that in my missy play, I engage in the act of eradicating black people Was. ”
Kristen Bell took to Instagram to apologize for “contributing to someone’s exclusion or erasure.”
Big mouth, which focuses on the comical horrors of puberty. Slate has already finished recording the show’s fourth season. Central Park is a musical in its first season on Apple TV Plus.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
