Sanjay Gupta’s action drama Mumbai Saga, led by John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, has failed to bring viewers to theaters during the weekdays, seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases. While the film managed to bring in rupees over the weekend, earned Rs 2.40 crore on Saturday and Rs 3.52 crore on Sunday, it started to decline as soon as the new week started. It dipped even more on Thursday with a collection of just Rs 80 lakh, earning the film a total of Rs 13.43 crore.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh has ‘underperformed’ the film despite its ‘positive word of mouth’. He tweeted, “#MumbaiSaga underperformer, despite positive word of mouth … #Hindi Markets – #Maharashtra is particularly affected due to #Covid19 epidemic … Venus 2.82 Crore, Saturn 2.40 Crore, Sun 3.52 Crore, Mon 1.49 Crore, Tue 1.47 Crore, Wed 90 Lakh, Guru 83 Lakh. The film industry is suffering once again due to increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. There is still doubt about people watching the film in the cinema hall. The makers of Rana Daggubati’s Haathi Mere Saathi and Rani Mukerji-Saif Ali Khan’s Bunty Aur Babli 2 have postponed the release of their films.
Film trade analyst and producer, Girish Johar said, “COVID-19 cases are on the rise, with such cases increasing fear among viewers and the protocol for 50% engagement is still there. To entertain and buy tickets is the last thing on anyone’s mind. Some states are putting a lockdown post from 7 pm which means you are losing the business of the evening show. This is not a good situation for the industry. . “
Mumbai Saga released in theaters on 19 March. Apart from Abraham and Hashmi, the film also stars Sunil Shetty, Kajal Aggarwal, Rohit Roy, Anjana Sukhani, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prateek Babbar, Sameer Soni, Amol Gupte and Gulshan Grover.
