Eighteen years after the release of the original film, 20th Century Studios is developing a new Master and Commander film. Per Deadline, with the studio moving on to a new film adaptation call a monster Screenplay writer Patrick Ness. The project is said to be in its early stages and currently there is no director or any actor attached at the moment. It is also unclear when shooting will tentatively resume with the studio’s targeted release window.

Inspired by the book series, the original Master and Commander film adaptation drew material from three different books written by O’Brien. The plan at the time was to bring the film back to a new long-running franchise with much more source material ready, but a sequel never got off the ground. Reportedly, this new 20th-century film adaptation will be based on the first book in the series, following a young Aubrey “as she is given her first command and also discovers that her naval surgeon, Stephen Maturin (Bettany How’s his friendship with ) to begin with.” Because it will serve as a prequel to the 2003 film, it is more than likely that new actors will play Aubrey and Maturin. Author Patrick Ness best known for writing the bestselling book series Chaos Walking, which was recently adapted into a film starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.
