While electric vertical take-off and landing passenger aircraft startup Joby Aviation is targeting North America for its initial commercial launch, founder and CEO Joben Bewart expects the company to have an early presence in Asia and Europe as well.
Bewart joins TC Sessions: Mobility 2021 on June 9, doesn’t place first; Although recent announcements suggest that it is limited to Los Angeles, Miami, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. But he paid attention to how those cities would look at first.
“I think we will have early markets in each of the three regions,” he said. “Our initial launch market will be in North America, where most of our team is currently. But there are incredible opportunities and cities around the world and we want to provide as many benefits as possible to as many people as possible. And so we move to manufacturing. So focused on growing.”

Today, Joby is focused on certification, on which he has been working with the FAA since 2018, as well as manufacturing his own EVTOL aircraft. The company is starting to put the pieces together about how and where it will work. And that’s adding to its size. In the past year, Joby has more than doubled its workforce, which is now around 800.
Earlier this month, Joby Aviation announced a partnership with REEF Technology, one of the nation’s largest parking garage operators, and real estate acquisition company Neighborhood Property Group, to provide an initial focus on Los Angeles, Miami, New York and New York City.
