Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix and his fiancée, actor Rooney Mara, have become the parents of a child, their first child together. The couple has named their son after Phoenix’s late elder brother, actor River Phoenix, who died in 1993 at the age of 23 from a drug overdose.
The news was shared by Russian filmmaker Viktor Kosakowski during a Q&A at the 2020 Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, according to US magazine, posting a screening of his documentary Gunda produced by Phoenix.
“He just got a kid, a beautiful son, called River, so he can no longer promote it,” Koskarkowski said of the Joker star. In May it was confirmed that 35-year-old Mara and 45-year-old Phoenix are expecting their first child together.
The couple met on the set of Mary Magdalene in 2016, with Mara playing the title role with Phoenix as Jesus. They soon began dating and made their red carpet debut at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival 2017.
Months later, Phoenix confirmed in an interview that they were living together in the Hollywood Hills. The two got engaged in July last year.
