Is getting drunk a sin for Christians?
Christians who want to practice Christian living and teach their children about the teachings of Christ should not have to answer this question: “Is getting drunk a sin for Christians?” But sometimes it seems like this is an unavoidable question, particularly when a Christian gets drunk.
For those who are serious about living out the teachings of Christ, they may take pride in the fact that they know when someone is “getting drunk.” They may assume that if someone has more than a few drinks, they are doing something wrong. They may even question whether anyone who is “getting drunk” is a true follower of Christ.
I have some experience in working with church members who are confused about this issue. So here is my honest answer to the question:
If you get drunk, you are doing what Christ would do. If you get drunk, then you are not following Christ’s teachings but simply using him as a tool for a selfish purpose. And the fact that you are getting drunk is a sign that you are not practicing what Christ taught.
To be perfectly honest, I once dated a girl who was truly addicted to alcohol. She had an insatiable desire to drink. She would get drunk several times a week in order to avoid work or make her boyfriend happy.
On the day I told her I would stop drinking, she told me, “Don’t worry, I will just go out with my friends and we can celebrate a little bit before the party.” The truth is that she went out with her friends all night, and on top of drinking, she did not care about celebrating. It was only when she got home that she found out that I had stopped drinking.
I am glad that she stopped drinking and it is nice to know that she is sober now. But that does not change the fact that she was abusing the teachings of Christ. That is exactly what she was doing. She was not following the teachings of Christ because she was trying to follow someone else.
When someone is “getting drunk,” they are using Christ’s teachings to “get by.” But they are not following the teachings of Christ because they are not doing the things that he would do.
This is why it is so important for us to learn the lessons of Christ to get the best results from them. If we miss a lesson, we can wind up not having the right outcomes, and that is a shame, because the teaching of Christ is something that we need for our lives.
If you take my wife’s example, you will know how it feels to miss a verse in a sermon or to think about something different than what Christ would have us do. We all experience this at one time or another in our lives.
Sometimes it is hard to remember how Christ would have us live our lives if we are “getting drunk.” But Christ knew what he was talking about, and that is exactly what we should do.
Let us remember that Christ did not “get drunk.” He took the steps to prepare himself for his teachings, and then he continued to live by the teachings of Christ until he was glorified in his life.
