Hollywood Rewind | Spy Kids: The quintessential family entertainer of the noughties

Family films were a rare genre with specific goals for children’s entertainment. Now we seem to think they are in abundance, but in the early 90s, this was more of an exception than a rule. However, things changed with the 2001 Robert Rodrigues film Spy Kids. The film was a passion for the filmmaker, who also wrote, produced and edited the film. Spy Kids gave a glimpse of the well-known faces and held Alexa Vega and Daryl Christopher Sabara responsible for the massive show.

Even 20 years down the line, Spy Kids is one of those rare films that has maintained its inherent innocence and charm. The visual effect wasn’t even half bad, given the time it was released. Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alan Cumming, Terry Hatcher, Danny Trejo, Robert Patrick, Mike Judge, George Clooney and Richard Linkletter formed the rest of the main cast.

The story revolves around a set of parents (played by Antonio and Carla) who are disguised super detectives who retire from active field work. They mainly do desk work but an important mission requires their help and they focus on their mantra once again to save the world. However, things go wrong and their two children, Carmen and Juni (Alexa and Daryl), decide to take matters into their own hands after finding out the true identity of their father and mother. But the road ahead is difficult, will they succeed? The rest of the plot takes place from here.

Spy Kids is packed with a swarm of cool-looking CGIs, some kickass action and lots of fun times for families. I remember watching this film on TV as a child and seeing all the high-tech items used in the film work wonders. There is not a lot of ‘acting’ here, but there is very little, it is quite solid. Child actors Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara stood out. They were attractive and were a great sibling team to watch onscreen. The film, which has turned just 20 years old, was received with great warmth upon its release. Its star Alexa recently recorded setbacks and surprises on Instagram, the film’s 20th anniversary, to remind her of the good old days. “How on earth was it 20 years ago?” Only the best memories with my family forever. So I had the privilege to be something special. I have an amount of love for the part of this solo cast and crew. You guys made my childhood !!! Thank you for making the most incredible experience for me … to Daryl and our families! #SpyKids # SpyKids20th, “an emotional Alexa wrote on social media.
