Oscar winner Emma Stone has drawn comparisons between her upcoming film Cruella and Joaquin Phoenix-starrer Joker.
The first trailer of Stone’s much-awaited Cruella dropped in February, after which many social media users began comparing the film to The Joker, which earned Phoenix its Academy Oscar at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Many noted the thematic similarities between the films as both stories relate to iconic villains coming from mysterious backgrounds.
The Joker advances the story of Arthur Flake, who becomes the classic DC Comics villain Joker. While Cruella tells the story of Cruella de Vil, the antagonist of the 1961 animated classic 101 Dalmatians.
When asked about the comparison, Stone told Total Film, “It’s very different from the Joker in many ways… I will never compare myself to Joaquin Phoenix.” I wish I were like them. “
The film is set during the punk rock revolution in London in the 1970s and follows young grifter Estella (Stone), an aspiring, unfit and uncouth designer determined to make a name for herself in the heartless fashion business .
The events and revelations during the film will see Estella embrace her evil side and become a raucous, fashionable and revengeful crutella.
Director Craig Gillespie said the two films may have some similarities, but insisted that Crayla is its “thing”.
“There are some really deep, emotional things that working with Cruella send him to the darker side of the villain.” So in that sense, it is (same), ”said the filmmaker.
“But it certainly has its point. Just to sort out Kralela’s name, I felt it was important to show this dark side of him. But it is going to be a lot of fun, it has a lot of humor. He said that unlike the Joker, its style has a very delightful banquet and rhythm.
Cruella, which also stars Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser and Mark Strong, is scheduled to be released in US cinemas and on May 28 in the streamer Disney Plus.
