Country Band Lady Antebellum Announces Name Change Over Its Ties to Slavery

The country music band Lady Antebellum is digging up her name due to the term “antebellum” and its association with slavery. Going further, the pop band that won the Grammy Award would be called Lady A. The band has played under its original name for the past 14 years, but thanks to current events in the United States, they have seen “blind spots we didn’t even know.”

Antebellum South was a period in the history of the United States from the end of the 18th century until the American Civil War began in 1861 in the South. During this period, slavery led to tremendous economic growth.

With worldwide protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, Lady Antebellum began receiving some comments on her name. Band members Hilary Scott, Dave Heywood and Charles Kelly released a statement regarding the name change, “after much personal reflection, band discussion, prayer and many honest conversations with some of our closest black friends and colleagues.” You can read another part of the statement below.

“When we set together about 14 years ago, we named our band after the southern ‘antebellum’ style house where we take our first photos. As musicians, it gave us a born in the south Reminded me of all the musicals that influenced us … Southern Rock, Blues, R&B, Gospel and of course the country. “

When it comes down to it, Lady Antebellum claims they were unaware of the history of antebellum in the 14 years they were using it. It seems strange that no one within the band’s inner circle, fans, media, or others thought to bring it at least once in 14 years, but the band is saying that this time it is so. They are now incredibly apologetic for their choice of name. The statement stating this continues.

“But we are sorry and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weighed the term, citing the period of history preceding history, including slavery. We were hurt by this Deeply sorry for and anyone who has felt insecure, ignored, or unsolicited. The cause of pain was never our heart’s intention, but it does not change the fact that it did, in fact, just that. So Today we speak and make a change. “

In addition to the name change and a massive apology, Lady Antebellum has donated to the Equal Justice Initiative, an Alabama-based non-profit that fights racial inequality through the group’s charitable institution, LediAid. According to the group, this is the beginning of their work to help fight racism. As they move forward, there will be more donations and announcements.

Lady A’s announcement has received mixed reactions after a cursory glance at the comments from the original post from this morning. There are many fans who are upset about the name change and are blaming “liberals” for the decision. However, the response has been mostly positive with many praising the band for developing the band and acknowledging that they made a mistake.
