Conan is making a comeback, this time on a streaming service. Netflix is currently developing the Conan the Barbarian TV show, Robert E. in Liberty-Action. Will focus on the classic character created by Howard. While details are scarce at the moment, the series could be the beginning of a new franchise on Netflix.
According to a new report, Pathfinder Media of Fredrik Malberg and Mark Wheeler has signed a deal with Netflix Conan the Barbarian TV series. It is also known as the first deal with Conan Properties International. Under the deal, Netflix has exclusive rights to acquire the rights to the entire Conan Library. This would mean that the company could develop both animated and live-action films and TV shows should they choose to do so.
For now, they have this first project to focus on. No writer or director is associated with the series yet, but a search is underway. There is no word on casting at this time, although the project appears to be in an early stage of development. For example, plot details are not yet available. Fredrik Malberg and Mark Wheeler are set to work as executive producers on the project.
Conan has been screened several times in the past. Most notably, Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed the 1982 character Conan the Barbarian, Which helped turn him into an action action movie star. A sequel, Conan the Destroyer, was released in 1984. Jason Momoa also starred in the 2011 reboot of the franchise. On the animated front, Conan Adventurer and Conan and Young Warriors both hit the airwaves in the early 90s. . There was also a short-lived live-action series called Conan the Adventurer which was released in 1997.
In 1932 Robert E. Howard produced Conan the Barbarian, aka Conan the Cimmerian. The character first appeared in a series of short stories in the pages of Wear Tales magazine. These are mainly attributed to the introduction of the “sword and sorcery” style. In addition to the previously discussed adaptations, the character has also been the subject of more than a thousand comic books, one hundred novels and video games, as well as toys and other collections. For Netflix, it represents a globally recognizable brand that can be a rich source for content. Just like every major streaming service, marquee, exclusive content is the name of the game.
One thing to consider is what can happen if Netflix uses the option to acquire exclusive global rights to the franchise. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been trying to make his King Conan film for years now. Should Netflix gain the rights, can they bring back Schwarzenegger and finally get the film on track? This is a pure estimate but not beyond the scope of probability. And it certainly looks like the kind of film they would invest in. We will make sure you keep posting as any further information on the project is provided. This news comes to us via Deadline.
