Chris Hemsworth, Miles Taylor, and Jernie Smollett are signed on for their upcoming film Spiderhead, based on a short story by George Saunders, streaming huge Netflix.
Joseph Kosinski is directing the feature film, which marks the filmmaker’s reunion with Taylor after Tom Gunnis titled Top Gun Maverick.
While Hemsworth is coming off the success of Extraction, her last Netflix project, Smollett is best known for the series Underground and on the big screen as Black Canary in DC’s Harley Quinn: Birds of Pre.
According to Deadline, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote partners on Zambieland and Deadpool, wrote the script.
Spiderhead sets in the near future, when defectors are introduced to volunteers as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. The focus is on two inmates who become trial patients for emotion-altering drugs that force prisoners to grapple with their past in a facility run by a brilliant visionary who oversees the program.
Saunders’ short story was first published in The New Yorker in 2010 and later collected in his Bestselling Anthology in Tenth of December.
Spiderhead will be produced by Eric Newman for the screen arcade, through the manufacturer’s first-look deal with Hemsworth at Netflix; Oren Katzeff and Geneva Wasserman for The Yorker Studios; Reese and Wernick, Tommy Harper and Jeremy Stackler.
