2067 Is a cerebral sci-fi thriller from Australian writer / director Seth Larney. The film is set in a dystopian future where climate change has decimated all plant life. Synthetic oxygen protects humans from breathing, but at a terrible cost. Artificial air causes a “disease” that is killing the rest of the population. 2067There are many esoteric secrets in its origins in detailed descriptions. They slowly erupt while the primary character faces an existential crisis. It is an interesting journey, but saddened by melodrama. 2067 Comes to a serious turn and cries.
Cody Smit-McPhee Ethan White stars as, a technician who works underground on the previous city’s volatile nuclear reactor. He volunteers for as many innings as possible. His beloved wife (Sana Shik) is dying of “disease”. He needs the highest quality oxygen to survive. Ethan’s father, Richard White (Aaron Glennen), was a famous scientist who predicted the coming apocalypse. Ethan died when he was a child, but left a truly bizarre gift to his son.
Ethan and his lifelong best friend (Ryan Quenton) Are called to the glittering headquarters of Cronicorp, producers of synthetic oxygen from deep depths. The company’s CTO (Deborah Mailman) has a shocking proposal. They have figured out a solution that could possibly save humanity. But for unknown reason, Ethan must be the one using the device. He is forced to make a fatalistic choice. Live with his wife in a dying world, or leave everything behind for a chance to save her.
2067 Cut back and forth for key moments in Ethan’s life. We see these scenes from other perspectives because he exposes the truth. The unanswered questions that drive the story will keep you guessing until the very end. The film tries to balance complex narrative with heavy philosophical themes. Problems arise when the characters deal with the emotional toll. Cody Smit-McPhee spends a good part of the runtime bawling his eyes out. Supporting characters also join the weeping festival. The downgrade becomes very prevalent.
2067 There is an indie that looks like a big budget Hollywood film. It has an impressive production design and special effects. Seth Larney (Tombiruo) Worked extensively as a visual effects supervisor. His considerable experience is evident from the opening frame. We see the world as an ecological disaster. This is followed by a hell of death from industrial pollution, oxygen atm and blood-pulsation. Larney then turns the gears completely into a lush green environment. The context of the story changes strikingly and artistically.
Hard sci-fi fans and abstract thinkers will appreciate Seth Larney’s conclusion. I could have done without the onslaught of tears, but liked the sophistication of the story. Riddle comes together for an exhilarating, surprisingly deliberate finale. The line between faith and science is not always clear. Both need to be achieved exceptionally, especially when facing severe consequences of climate change. 2067 Arcadia is a production of Futurism Studios and Elevation Production Finance. It will be available on demand from RLJE Films from 2 October.
