The surprise is that for the first time fitting in for an unexpected year, Carrie Underwood and Thomas Raet tied for Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, the first time the top award has ever been split between two artists.
Underwood and Rat were equally surprised after host Keith Urban announced the tie at the award show held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday.
“Keith, what’s happening right now?” Before thanking her family, Raayat asked the surprise. “Underwood appeared right after 2020, commenting?” Before adding, “I’m more than happy to share this with Thomas Rott.”
The show was delayed for months on CBS due to the epidemic, first relocating from Las Vegas to Nashville and held without an audience in empty spaces. There was a lot of anticipation for the show, which introduced Taylor Swift to ACM for the first time in seven years.
Underwood’s win is his third total in that category and Reet’s first win. Incidentally, one woman has not won that award since 2011 when Swift won it.
Swift’s acoustic performance of “Betty” from her new album “Focalor” was simple, with just a stage floodlights and a harmonica player for accompaniment, but her smile shone as she sang the song openly.
Luke Coombs, who was nominated for Entertainer of the Year, still became a winner, choosing Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. With tremendous streaming numbers in its first two years, Coombs thanked fans for their support of Bluebird Cafe.
“It’s too much to process right now, I just can’t believe it,” Kamb said. He said, ‘I just want to thank my team, my beautiful wife and fans in my life. You guys have done everything for me. “
The country group Old Dominion won Song of the Year and Group of the Year, as they acknowledged how the empty seats in front of them reminded them of those they had lost.
The awards aired from vacant spots in Nashville, with no fans and no applause as the winners eagerly agreed to accept their awards. Old Dominion lead singer Matthew Ramsey said the empty space and quiet made him think of the friends and family he had lost.
“I can feel them,” Ramsay said on the stage at the Opry House. She accepted the award for song of the year for the One Man Band. “They are very proud, and it is such an honor to receive it in their presence.”
Host Keith Urban noted all of this year’s changes for the show and for the country in general, saying that 2020 had been an “unpredictable and uncertain year”. After the wildfires reported on the West Coast, hurricanes to the south, Urban said the country was struggling with two epidemics: COVID-19 and social injustice.
“Many people have lost their lives,” he said. “But the precedent set by essential activists, our first responders, is echoing around the world and right here in our country community, with voices crying out for equality in all walks of life.”
Marin Morris, a prominent nominee, won two awards, including Female Artist of the Year and Concert of the Year.
“It’s very strange to talk to anyone, but I have so many people to thank. It’s an award I never expected to win, “the new mother said,” Oh my God, I have to pee!
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, who were not in Nashville, were in a green screen room that turned into a virtual replica of Bluebird for their duet “Happy Anywhere”. Shelton won the best award of the year for his song, “God’s Country”.
Miranda Lambert performed a stripped-down version of her No. 1 song “Bluebird” at the Bluebird Cafe in a blue fringe shirt and sparkly belt. Lambert’s vocals filled the space at the Little Lyricists’ Club, surrounded by tables and chairs, but no fans.
Underwood sang a tribute to distinguished female Opry members, including Patsy Cline, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Barbara Mandrell, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. She effortlessly snaps of class such as “Crazy,” “You’re a Woman Enough,” “Why You’ll Come in Here Like ‘,” and “Fancy.”
“They are some of my heroes and I feel honored to stand alongside them as a fellow of the Opry,” Underwood said, singing her heart out for a place that shines with lights Was where people were supposed to be.
The eligibility period for this year’s show was calendar year 2019 and voting ended before the epidemic.
