Amazon Music Adds Podcasts, Snags Disgraceland Exclusivity
As previously rumored, starting on Wednesday, September 16, Amazon Music is adding the ability to listen to podcasts in the US, UK, Germany and Japan across all levels of its service.
It is also producing new, original and exclusive content with celebrities and artists such as DJ Khaled, Becky G, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith.
At the same time, a move that echoes the acquisition of Spotify Joe Rogan Experience, Amazon Music has stated that it will become the exclusive home Disgraceland, A true-crime podcast based on a popular music industry, debuted in February 2021.
All of this content will be available on the Amazon Music app for iOS and Android, as well as all Amazon Echo smart speakers.
Amazon Echo users are able to listen to podcasts before today’s announcement, however, it required the use of third-party skills such as the Apple Podcast app.
As expected, Amazon Music will not offer its listeners the ability to subscribe to any podcast directly. Instead, for podcasts available on the Amazon Music platform, Amazon Music must be submitted via this page.
Amazon Music states that it will not interfere with the podcast’s existing advertising or embed its own advertisements, but requires that the ads follow Amazon’s content policies, which can be quite restrictive. Content to be restricted within advertisements include coupon sites, fertility clinics and research, free non-Kindle e-books and online pharmacies, to name a few.
Because the submission process involves a partnership agreement with various Amazon entities, it gives Amazon a lot of control over whether podcasts are available to its audience of more than 55 million listeners.
