Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Alia Bhatt have been summoned by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Mumbai in a criminal defamation case filed by Babu Raoji Shah, one of the four children adopted by Gangubai Kathiawadi. The filmmaker is directing a film based on the life of Kathiawadi in which he stars in an anonymous role alongside Alia.
According to an India Today report, Sanjay and Alia will have to appear in the Mumbai court on 21 May.
Shah is one of four children adopted by Kathiawadi. He has claimed that Hussain Zaidi’s book, the chapter on Gangubai Kathiawadi in Mumbai’s Mafia Queens, is defamatory, tarnishes his reputation and violates his right to privacy and self-respect.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book, in which Alia plays the lead role of Gangubai and hence a defamation suit is filed against the filmmaker, actress and Zaidi.
In other news, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, has now tested negative and will soon resume shooting for the remainder of the film in Mumbai. Will return to the set. Gangubai Kathiawadi is scheduled to release in theaters on July 30.
