2020 has made us appreciate films because they have helped us fight solitude, inspire us and give wings to our imagination while we were locked inside our homes. In particular, Malayalam filmmakers showed the way last year by making well entertaining and thoughtful films. We cannot wait to capture what they have for us in 2021.
The makers of Drishyam 2 were surprised when they announced that the film would be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video. However, the OTT release does not make the film any less exciting. It will be interesting to see what happens when the skeletons start coming out of the closet. The film is the sequel to the 2013 crime drama Drishum. Director Jethu Joseph has retained the entire main star cast of the previous film. The release date has not been announced yet.
It is easily one of the most awaited Malayalam films of 2021. Directed jointly by Srinath Rajendran and Vini Vishwa Lal, the film will bring Dulquar Salman to the big screen with the infamous real-life criminal Sukumar Kurup. The film will be released in five languages including Hindi. It also stars Shobhita Dhulipala, Indrajit Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko and Sunny Wayne.
Dressed as a political thriller, a hit screenplay is produced by the duo Bobby and Sanjay. There is an all-star cast led by Mammootty, directed by Sanathosh Vishwanath, who is said to play the role of a chief minister in the film. Joju George, Murali Gopi, Nimisha Sajayan and Shankar Ramakrishnan are part of the supporting cast.
Aashirwad Direction Adujivitham has been described as the most ambitious film of Prithviraj’s career so far. The film is an adaptation of Benyamin’s famous novel of the same name. Prithviraj lost a lot of weight to play an Indian immigrant who struggles to escape the Saudi Arabian desert.
It is also not possible for a film buff to not feel excited about the upcoming Lijo Jose Pelisserie film. Especially, if the film is a collaboration between Pelisserie and writer S. Haresh, who gave us Jallikattu, India’s official entry for the Oscar 2021. What’s more, the film features Pellissery’s regular collaborators Chemban Vinod, Joju George, Vinay Forte and Jafar Idukki.
Malik is the product of another exciting collaboration: Mahesh Narayanan and Fahd Fasil. The actor-director duo’s first collaboration was the critically acclaimed 2017 film Take Off. And the two teamed up for CU Soon in 2020. Malik is said to be a period drama based on real-life incidents related to rebellion against injustice done to minority communities. The film is slated for release on 13 May 2021.

Mohanlal, in the role of Tytler, highlighted the maritime warfare of IV by hitting Kunjali in Priyadarshan’s Rs 100 crore magnum ops shed. Set in the 16th century, the film has a large star cast including Arjun Sarja, Sunil Shetty, Prabhu, Manju Warrier, Kirti Suresh, Mukesh and Siddiqui. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 26, 2021.
Mammootty’s The Priest will also be a screen hit in 2021. Debutant actor Joffin T. Directed by Chacko, from the script written by Shyam Menon and Deepu Pradeep, the film is called a mystery thriller. Priest also stars Manju Warrier, Nikhila Vimal, Srinath Bhasi, Sanaya Ayyappan and Jagdish.
A screenplay written by Gopi Chidambaram is Naveen Pavel’s period drama directed by Rajiv Ravi. The film is set in the backdrop of the ‘Chappa’ system. The feudal system was employed as a method for the distribution of work. The film was released on May 13, 2021.
The superhero film is directed by Basil Joseph of Godha. Tovino Thomas plays the Indian version of ‘Man Fastest Man Zinda’ in Mineral Murali. And we can’t wait to see it.
